Answer to #3

Three of: child's inability to seek assistance on his or her own, child's unique vulnerabilities that put him or her at risk, the need to treat parents as well as children, the problems of placing children outside of the family, and the value of intervening before problems become acute.

Answer to #4

While many conditions inevitably result in brain damage and intellectual disability, early detection of PKU can prevent any adverse consequences. Children with PKU are unable to metabolize phenylalanine. If they ingest food with this amino acid, it accumulates and causes brain damage that leads to retardation. The intellectual disability seen in PKU only occurs if foods with phenylalanine are ingested, therefore it is preventable.
