At low doses, alcohol activates the brain's pleasure center, which releases endorphins and produces a sense of well-being. At higher doses, alcohol depresses the excitatory neurotransmitter, glutamate, which slows brain activity. The effect is that it impairs learning, judgment, and self-control. At higher levels coordination, speech, and vision are impaired.
Eventually, a person passes out. If he or she does not, at concentrations above 0.55 percent, alcohol poisoning is fatal.
