Approximately 80% or more of all land plants form a mutualistic relationship with arbuscular mycorrhizae. The hyphae of these fungi form swollen vesicle invaginations (or arbuscules) inside plants' roots. The surface area of the roots increases, which allows for the plants to obtain more nutrients in the soil. The arbuscular mycorrhizae (fungi) benefit from fixed carbon provided by the plant.
