The mower is dull and is shredding the grass blades rather than cutting them cleanly.

It is not crucial to return clippings, but returned clippings do contribute additional nutrients to the grass when they decompose.

To assure contact between the bottom of the sod and the prepared ground so that roots will grow rapidly into the soil.

Aeration will be required, the weeds will have to be killed, and the lawn fertilized and watered thoroughly. Bare spots will need to be reseeded.

It will generate heat and develop disease problems and deteriorate or die.
