Let x = larger number  and   y = smaller number.

Since the difference between the larger number and the smaller number is 54,
then  xy = 54   or  x = 54 + y
Proportion

since the ratio is smaller is to the larger as one is to three, then

y / x = 1/ 3

y / 54 + y = 1/ 3

3 y = 54 + y

3 y - y = 54

y = 54/ 2

y = 27

 x = 54 + 27

 x = 81

Check Your ANSWER

The difference between 81 and 27 is 54 and the ratio of the smaller number 27 to the larger number 81 is 27:81 which is 1:3 in lowest terms.
