Cytotoxic T cells are distinguished by the presence of the CD8 cell-surface glycoprotein. They directly kill infected cells, as well as abnormal body cells such as cancer cells. T-cytotoxic (TC) cells recognize and aid in destroying cells that display foreign antigens on their surface. TC cells require contact with virus-infected cells expressing class I MHC through their specific T-cell receptors.

Cytotoxic T cells (TC), or CD8 cells, are activated by endogenous antigens and MHC class I on a target cell and are transformed into a CTL.

CTLs lyse the target cell or induce apoptosis in the target cell.
