Answer to q. 1

Responses will vary and should include the tendency of adolescents to believe they
are invincible, the tendency toward rebellion, the effects of peer pressure, and
inconsistent or inadequate parental guidance.

Answer to q. 2

Longitudinal research suggests that drug use causes more problems than it solves for
adolescents. Discuss some of the physical and emotional problems that alcohol, tobacco, and
marijuana cause for teenagers.

Answer to q. 3

Answers will vary. Peers can support changes associated with adolescence, they
can allow for experimentation with identity, they can be a sounding board, and they
can help to negotiate conflicts at home or with one's culture. The student should
provide specific examples of when the peer group did or did not live up to these
functions.

Answer to q. 4

(1) Adolescents do not simply fall in with the wrong crowd. They seek out peers who
are similar to them in values and interests. (It is true, however, that negative peer
influence can be stronger in times of uncertainty, as when a student is new to a
school.) (2) It is true that adolescents behave in ways together that they would not
do individually.

Answer to q. 5

Rumination is the mental replaying and/or talking about difficult incidents. Replaying
the incident can lead to depression, especially in females. Rumination is more
common in females. Though it may increase sadness, it can also protect someone
from impulsive actions such as suicide.

Answer to q. 6

Deviancy training happens in a peer relationship where one person teaches
another person how to rebel against society and social norms. Deviancy training is a
form of social contagion, which means that people will learn behaviors from those
around them, simply from spending time with them
