Describe the factors that affect species richness. Describe the parameters that would probably result in an environment
with the greatest possible species richness. Knowing what you do about the tropical rain forests, do they meet these
expected parameters? What will be an ideal response?

Question 2

Humans have small mites that live in hair follicles and oil glands around the nose and eyelashes. What would you
need to know to classify them as exhibiting mutualism, commensalism, or parasitism? What will be an ideal response?

Answer to q. 1

Concepts to Consider: Species richness increases with the number of potential ecological
niches and the area of the habitat, but is inversely related to the amount of geographical
isolation and the environmental stress of the habitat; species richness is greater in ecotones
due to the edge effect; species richness is greater in old, stable communities. Rain forests are
stable, old, typically continental habitats, and have very high species richness.

Answer to q. 2

Concepts to Consider: In mutualism, benefits are conferred to both species involved (Do the
mites benefit? Do humans benefit from mites living in our skin?). Commensalism involves a
benefit to one partner and no benefit or harm to the other partner (If the mites benefit, do we
notice their presence?). Parasites benefit from the host, which is harmed to some degree
(Assuming the mites benefit, are we harmed?).
