Answer to q. 1

ANSWER: Normal colon cells may turn into a small adenoma or benign growth if there is a loss of a
tumor suppressor gene or some other DNA mutation. The small adenoma can grow into a
larger growth if an oncogene becomes activated or a second tumor suppressor gene is lost. If
a third mutation occurs the adenoma can become a malignant growth. Viruses, carcinogens,
radiation or compromised immunity can lead to these DNA mutations.
