Answer to q. 1

Evidence would favor mitochondria. While almost all eukaryotes have mitochondria, only plants and
some protists have chloroplasts. The prevalence of mitochondria in all major eukaryotic lineages
suggests that they evolved first.

Answer to q. 2

Both RNA and DNA can store genetic material. But, only RNA can catalyze reactions, thus letting it
serve as both hereditary material and enzyme. This would simplify the necessary reactions of the
earliest cells.
