If a person had only cone cells in the retina, this would most likely result in

  a. an inability to distinguish red from green.
  b. an inability to perceive any color at all.
  c. difficulty seeing in dim light.
  d. difficulty seeing in very bright light.
  e. poor perception of detail in the center of the visual field.

Question 2

The brain perceives the pitch of a sound based on the

  a. region of the cochlea sending the signal.
  b. number of action potentials sent by the neurons.
  c. speed of the action potentials sent by the neurons.
  d. size of the action potentials sent by the neurons.
  e. tension produced along the cochlear membrane.

Answer to q. 1

C; The rods are capable of responding to very low levels of light, and if you had to depend on your cones alone, you could not see well at night. The cones allow for red, green, and blue color vision (choices a and b) and are concentrated in the center of the visual field (choice e). A loss of pigment cells around the retina would give you problems in dealing with bright light (choice d).

Answer to q. 2

A; Different regions of the cochlea have different mechanical properties due to the width of the internal membrane. Different pitches cause different parts of the membrane to vibrate, stimulating particular nerve cells touching that part. The brain decodes which neurons have sent a message as the pitch of the sound received. The number of potentials codes the loudness of the sound (choice b). The speed of conduction and height of action potential will not vary according to either pitch or intensity (choices c and d). The membrane itself does not produce action potentials (choice e).
