-The text outlines a clear list of investigative goals that police strive to accomplish during an investigation.  First, the police must determine whether or not a crime has been committed.  Second, they must obtain information and any available evidence.  This step is critical, for this information and evidence can be used later in the court proceedings by the prosecution.  The third step is apprehending suspects.  If the suspect is, in fact, the criminal in the case, the apprehension relieves society of a criminal burden.  Recovering stolen property is the next step in criminal investigations.  The final step in a criminal investigation is successfully presenting a criminal case to prosecutors.  This final step is crucial, since prosecution of criminals is what leads to their imprisonment and removal of a threat from society.
