According to the ideology of Republican Motherhood, women were to have an important role, but a limited one, in the new nation. Republican Motherhood was a kind of middle position between pre-Revolutionary passivity and the female activism that flourished during the Revolution itself. Revolutionary Motherhood advocates suggested that women would advise their husbands and raise their sons to be active citizens and their daughters to be part of another generation of Republican mothers who shaped the nation from home.
