At times the needs of our families conflict with our work responsibilities. Could this possibly be the underlying issue here?

Explain the conflict resolution skills displayed by the leader in the scenario. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate those of the leader.
How might earlier collaboration have been beneficial?
Some organizations utilize non Registered Nurses in the Case Manager role. What additional skills, knowledge and attributes would the BSN-prepared Registered Nurse bring to case management in this scenario?

In the scenario between that staff nurse and the leader, there is definitely an underlying family issue here. Not only is the staff nurse afraid of the situation, but now her family is concerned and does not want her to perform her job in that particular location. The leader is showing signs of perceived conflict as defined in our text. The leader seems to be trying to pacify the staff nurse, instead of taking the issue more seriously. While it is important for the patients to get the treatment they need, it is more important for the leader to make sure that her staff is safe at all times. According to our lesson this week, “collaboration skills that are needed to provide high-quality, safe care, including being aware of one’s personal feelings on an issue, problem solving, effective communication, assessment of the needs of the patient or team, and negotiation,” (CCN, 2016). I would rate this leader as a 5. By collaborating with the staff nurse earlier, the leader would not be in a position of possibly losing a nurse with her specialty. If this nurse decides to leave, they would not only be short staffed, but they could possibly put patients in danger by not receiving the care that they need.

There are many businesses that utilize non Registered Nurses in the Case Manager role. If a RN were in that position, the RN would have the ability to assess, plan, educate, and implement any medical issues that a case manager without the medical knowledge of being a nurse may not realize. There is more to being a nurse than passing medications. We have the training to not only make sure a patient has the medical devices he or she may need in the home, but also to educate the patient on their diagnosis.
