What is an operon?

A unit made up of linked genes that is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis. The activity of the promoter that controls the expression of the lac operon is regulated by two different proteins. One of the proteins prevents the RNA polymerase from transcribing (negative control), the other enhances the binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter (positive control).

Negative control:

- When lactose is absent, the repressor protein is active, and transcription is turned off.
-- When lactose is present, the repressor protein is inactivated, and transcription is turned on.

Positive control:

- When glucose is absent, another regulatory protein (CAP) binds to the promoter of the lac operon, increasing the rate of transcription if lactose is present.
