Describe Pavlov's work on conditioning, including his experimental method and the extent to which he attempted to control irrelevant variables.

Why would behaviorism be considered more important to the development of psychology than functionalism?

Explain how functionalists and behaviorists differ on their beliefs with regards to childrearing.

- accidental discovery of conditioned response in dogs while studying digestive glands; started with a mentalistic approach, but then turned to a more objective approach; tested multiple stimuli and and determined that many could produce CR if it didn't elicit anger or fear; collected saliva to determine how much and when dogs salivated

- presentation of CS and US together; after a number of pairings an association forms; long program; rigorous methodology

- designed cubicles to control for outside variables; researcher could operate CS, present food, and collect saliva without being seen by animal; constructed the "Tower of Silence" that eliminated noise, temperature extremes, odors, etc. that could influence animals
