Hi Lindsey T

Statistical power is the ability to reject the null hypothesis when we should do just that. Effect size is a measure of the difference between observed statistics, without consideration of sample size.

Larger effects are easy to detect with a given sample size and make rejecting the null hypothesis easier than with smaller effects. We can calculate the sample size necessary to detect a real effect of a given size with a specific level of statistical power.
