Classical criminology emphasized punishment as a deterrent to criminal behavior. In the modern criminal justice system is deterrence the main purpose of punishment or are there other purposes for punishment today? If, as advocates of capital punishment point out, it ensures that people put to death will never commit another crime, why do we not make all crimes punishable by death? Why did Beccaria and Bentham not advocate for universal capital punishment?
