These are the two broad approaches used in the United States when sentencing a convicted offender. With determinate sentencing the judge imposes a sentence for a fixed time period within narrow statutory limits. Release is determined by percent of sentence completed rather than whether a person has been rehabilitated. Under the indeterminate sentence approach, the judge specifies a minimum and maximum sentence length and the prisoner's release lies with parole officials who determine the actual release date based on the prisoner's rehabilitation.
