Clemency, which refers to an act of leniency in the criminal justice system, typically refers to one of three things: A reprieve (wherein the execution of a sentence is stayed so that something else, such as an appeal, can occur), a commutation of sentence (in which the penalty is reduced, such as from death to life imprisonment), or a pardon (wherein a person is released from the legal consequences of the crime, such as the release from death row of a person who is now believed to be innocent as a result of DNA analysis).
