Technology plays a pivotal role in shaping and reforming every aspect of human nature. This also extends to how our law is enforced; at every corner we have red-light and speed cameras to help reduce traffic accidents, ankle bracelets to track and monitor people under arrest, and breathalizers to prevent drunk drivers from operating a vehicle. More, however, can still be done with technology, especially as advancements become more widespread and reliable.

Not only can technology help prevent crime, it may also be used in reducing the repetition of wrong-doings by the offenders.  Most of the time, prisons are considered to be "revolving-door" institutions where convicted felons are easily released back on to the streets without being rehabilitated; fixing this should be the main pillar of corrections, which has largely yet to change.

Virtual reality in correctional institutions presents an emerging opportunity for rehabilitating the offenders. It is usually positioned in a way that it can reach as well as treat people of varying conditions. For example, it can be used by inmates (and staff) to access virtual versions of training scenarios usually not possible in prisons; its rehabilitative power is related to recidivism reduction. In addition, technology can be used in treating mental illnesses specifically as an effective and safe way of the exposure therapy which treats many diseases including the anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder. It is reported that about 46% of the prisoners have mental disorder thus this therapy could have a great impact on the percentage of the victims, hence reducing the number of offenders in the correctional institutions.
