1. They are filter feeders, they have a skeleton-like structure made of calcium carbonate, they exhibit growth, basically they are born they grow they reproduce and they die, which is a characteristic of all animals.

2. Cells are flagellated, this enables them to disperse.

3. There are specialized cells in sponges called choanocytes ("collared cells") which bear a great resemblance to choanoflagellates.

One more thing to add to number 1... Sponges lack true tissues, which is a primitive characteristics of early animals.
