Suppose the population of a certain bacteria in a laboratory sample is 100. If it doubles in population every 6 hours, what is the growth rate? How many bacteria will there be in two days?

Solution:

0 ... 100
6 ... 200
12 ... 400
18 ... 800
24 ... 1,600

After the first 24 hrs., there are 1 600 bacteria.

30 ... 3,200
36 ... 6,400
42 ... 12,800
48 ... 25,600

After 48 hrs. (2 days), there are 25 600 bacteria.

To show this algebraically:

The growth rate is 100% every 6 hours.
