Genomics has identified large sections of chromosomes that have homologous sections on other chromosomes. These segments are larger than a few genes and can be the size of whole chromosomes, but they can also show rearrangements in their orientation and gene order.  There is also a phylogenetic signature of such duplications, where more closely related species share more similarity in the arrangement and number of chromosome segments, meaning that this phenomenon is a product of evolution.
