Instructions.• Solve the following problems completely and present your final answers in two (2) decimal
DENSITY AND RESSURE
1. The British gold sovereign coin is an alloy of gold and copper having a total mass of 7.988 g, and is 22 karat gold.
a. Find the mass of gold in the sovereign in kilograms using the fact that the
number of karats = 24 x
(Note: The density and value of gold depend on its "karat" value, which is a measure of how many parts in 24 (by mass) are pure gold.
b) • Calculate the volumes of gold and copper, respectively, used to manufacture the coin.
(Note: mass densities of gold and copper are 19.3 g/cm3 and 8.94 g/cm
c. Calculate the density of the British sovereign coin.
2. The rear wheel of a 150 kg tricycle accidentally ran over a nail. The circular tip of the nail has a diameter of 0.001 m. How much pressure did the wheel of the tricycle experience assuming that the entire weight of the tricycle is concentrated on the rear wheel that ran over the nail.
Solve the following problem with a little help from the diagram of a simple hydraulic system of two pistons
and cylinders connected together.
The cross-section area of piston Al is 0.000400 m2.
The cross-section area of piston A2 is 0.00800 m2.
(a) If a force of 40 N (Fl) is applied to piston 1, calculate the pressure created in the fluid.
(b) Calculate the force F2 created by the force of 40 N on piston Al.
(c) In order to create a force of 2000 N from cylinder 2, what should the cross-section area of piston 2 be
if the force applied to piston 1 is still 40 N?
