Outline two methods you can differentiate f(x) = (x^2-4x+2)(x^4+2)?
Post Merge: 2 years ago

I also had trouble with this question I tried solving it, but I'm not sure.

the question is Jane has incorrectly differentiated the function f(x) = 4(2x^2+5)^3 as prime(x)= 12(4x)^2.

Explain what her error was and what rule should be used to correctly differentiate. (I believe chain rule)

Jane has incorrectly differentiated the function f(x) = 4(2x^2+5)^3 as prime(x)= 12(4x)^2.

When you take the derivative, you apply the power rule first, and you leave the expression "(2x^2+5)" the way it is as a factor, then multiply the expression by the derivative of (2x^2+5), which requires the power rule again:

4(3)(2x^2+5)^2 * (4x)

48x(2x2+5)2

This is called the chain rule.
