Laocoon and His Sons, Rhodes, 1st century BCE

-carved into from a single block of marble

SUBJECT MATTER- Laocoon was a a Trojan priest. He was in Trojan when the arrival of the Trojan horse it thought to be a gift from the Greek but Laocoon was against letting the horse in and said to not trust the Greeks. They let the horse in then boom the Trojan War. The gods who favored the Greeks wanted to punish Laocoon for almost revealing the plan and almost ruining it. So they sent the serpents to kill him but he was out with his family so they got killed too.

STYLE- Dramatic( the snake are wrapped around them biting them)
-Left son has already been bitten has his head flaking back and his body is limp.
- Laocoon expression shows the agony he was in because the snake bite him.
- Right son fear great worry and is in disbelief trying to break free
EMOTIONAL RESPONSE

Athena Attacking the Giants from the Altar of Zeus, Pergamon 175 BCE

-Mythological Scene of the gods fight giants symbolizes the Pergamenes fight the Gauls.
-Good vs evil Pergamenes vs Gauls

SUBJECT MATTER: Athens is grabbing the giant by his hair and is pushing him down his mother is pleading to Athens to spare her son. Goddess Nike is crowning Athena for her bravery

STYLE-Anti-classical: intense emotion ( the giants eyes & facial expression fear, his mom eyes look sad to a greater degree)
- no balance no harmony
- Chacotic movement
-implied eye movement from athen to losing giant to his sadden mother to Nike earth goddess
- Athena was portrayed as a warrior/ powerful figure she is a war goddess
- High relief Break out of the frieze more dramatic theatrical.
-Movement in the drapery

(B) Classical Period- This is golden period of greece when Democracy and philosophical terms like Freedom of expression came into picture. These contemporary developments were seen in the Sculptures of this period also. Also the Sculptures of this were period are also known as stylized forms of archaic Sculptures.

1. Theme of the Sculptures- Philosophical terms like Freedom of Expression, Joyous of freedom of movement, and earthly natters were given more focus.

  2. Features of the Sculptures- Poses were introduced in the sculptures and they were made stylish. Ordinary subjects were shown extraordinarily and universal signs were depicted through them. Instead of metaphysical the Sculptures depicted Earthly matters.

3. Objects of the Sculptures- The Human itself was the objective of Sculptures. The sculptures tried to explain the world in terms of cause and effect and also depicted the importance of "Logic and Reason".

(B) Hellinistic Period - It can be said that this period begin with the death of Alexander. This period witnessed the most beautiful forms of sculpture.

1. Features of this period- Sculptures were made very naturalistic. Sculptures of this period focused on the depiction of emotions and they were highly expressive. Depiction of beauty was not given much attention in this period .

2. Theme of Sculptures of this period - (a)treid to depict the suffering of common people.(b) sleeping people were shown (c) People of old age.

3. Subjects- Women, Children , Common People and Animals were depicted.

examples of this period- Venus Demilo, Winged victory of Samothrace,Laocoön and his sons.
