and what is the role of NAD+ in glycolysis?

Fats are broken down in glycerol and fatty acids. The glycerol goes to the liver for conversion to glucose. The fatty acids are transported to the bloodstream to muscle and other body cells. There, the fatty acids enter the aerobic respiration pathway, and ATPS are formed. Note, however, that fat can only be used when sufficient oxygen is present in the cells. Finally, some of the fatty acids can be transported to the liver for conversion to other molecules.

NAD+ is an electron carrier. It collects the energy from breaking down glucose bonds where it becomes reduced (gain electrons), to form NADH, in other words, it helps oxidize (meaning take away electrons) glucose. It then shuttles the electrons to the electron transport chain where the electrons are released to flow down a cascade of proteins which use the energy to pump H+ ions across the inner membrane, in other words NADH is oxidized back to NAD by the electron transport chain so it can go back and get more electrons from glucose.

Glycolysis step 6:

Generation of 1,3-Bisphosphoglycerate catalysed by Glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase:

D-glyceroaldehyde-3-phosphate + NAD+ +Pi <=> 1,3-Bisphosphoglycerate + NADH + H

NAD is reduced at step 6 (see above) to NADH as an essential part of the reaction - since H's need to be removed.

NAD+ picks up the electrons that are removed during glycolysis Rightwards Arrow makes a molecule of NADH. This NADH goes to the electron transport chain where it gives up the electron to the electron transport chain.
