Traditional psychoanalysis involved the client lying on a sofa, the analyst out of view, and the client saying whatever comes to mind without censorship (free association).
Therapy may take place several times a week for many years.
A key element is transference.
In modern psychodynamic therapy, analysts face the client, are more goal-directed, and limit therapy to a specific number of sessions (10-20).
Transference is still a key element.
