In the Greek legend, the Sphinx asked each traveler a question.  If they couldn’t answer correctly they were killed.
The question was this:  What animal walks on four feet in the morning, two feet at noon, and three feet in the evening?
Oedipus was the only one to give the correct answer.
The animal is a human, who crawls on all fours as a baby, walks upright as an adult, and limps in old age with the aid of a staff.
