When we took our imaginary stroll through the brain in Chapter Four (The Brain: Source of Mind and Self),
   we encountered a structure just beneath the thalamus that was associated with survival of both the
   individual and the species.  Name this structure and then explain the role it plays in our survival. Explain
   why this part of the brain was emphasized when a team of researchers isolated a genetic variation that

The hypothalamus is associated with survival of both the individual and the species.
It regulates drives such as hunger, thirst, and sex.
Areas in the hypothalamus are involved in regulating hunger and body weight.
Leptin affects appetite through affecting these areas in the hypothalamus.
