Gender differences in ways of expressing love and intimacy reflect social, economic, and cultural forces.
A woman did not just marry a man; she married a standard of living.
Therefore women could not afford to marry anyone unsuitable.
She married for extrinsic reasons like financial security.
Men, on the other hand, could afford to marry for love and other romantic reasons.
This changed when women entered the workforce in large numbers.
