Imagine that you have shrunk to microscopic size and that you are traveling through the brain starting at its lowest point, just above the spine.  What are the three structures of the brain stem that you encounter?  What function is associated with each structure?

Pons—involved in sleeping, waking, and dreaming.
Reticular activating system—screens incoming information and arouses higher brain areas.
