Neuro response occurs in the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) and is triggered through the response to increasing or decreasing light that's begun through the process of vision; measured in the retinohypothalamic tract, leading into the SCN. Essentially, everything on the planet (plants, insects, winds) are driven by the 24 solar cycle. Humans are no different. We were programmed through evolution to hunt/gather at peak times and sleep when our vision limited our abilities, also increasing personal safety. Franz Halzberg is credited with modern research, having done extensive work in the 1950's to prove the light/dark relationship with circadian rhythms rising/falling.
