Harry learns the schema for a “dog” by playing with his golden retriever. On a trip to a farm, he sees a collie and points, saying “Doggie!” Then he notices a lamb, and says “Doggie!” Explain Jean Piaget’s concepts of assimilation and accommodation using this example.

We organize and interpret information into concepts, or frameworks known as schemas. Piaget's theory describes two processes, assimilation, and accommodation, that illustrate how we adjust our schemas when learning new information:

  • By playing with a golden retriever, Harry learns the schema for dog / doggie, this concept likely includes things like an animal with a furry / fluffy body, ears, tail and standing on four legs.
  • Next, he sees a different breed of dog, a collie, and applies the same schema and calls it doggie. This assimilation of the schema is likely due to the similarities of the two animals.
  • Noticing a lamb, Harry applies the dog schema again, likely because of the similarities to the dogs:  furry / fluffy body and ears and standing on all four legs. Once Harry has been taught that the lamb is not a dog, he has experienced new information. This is a different four-legged, furry animal; a new schema is needed for this category.
