Smiling Face with Horns Smiling Face with Horns Smiling Face with Horns Smiling Face with Horns
In 1937,a man employed to lay water pipes in Croyden,England, was found to be the source of severe epidemic of typhoid fever.T heman , an asymptomatic carrier of SALMONELLA ENTERICA serotype Typhi, the bacterium that causes typhoi, habitually urinated at his job site.In this process,he contaminated the town's water supply with bacteria from his bladder.Over 300 cases of typhoid fever developed ,and 43 people died before man was identified as the carrier.
1.How do you think health officials were able to indentify the source of this typhoid epidemic?
2.Given that antibiotics were not generally avalible in 1937,how could health officials end the epidemic short of removing the man from the job site?

I looked up page 283 for instance and all I found was:

Clinical Case Study: Antibiotic Overkill (p. 283)
1. The powerful antibiotic had killed the bacterial microbiota present in the
oral mucosa and vagina. This allowed yeast to flourish, resulting in her
symptoms.
2. The yeast no longer had to compete for nutrients in the absence of the
natural bacteria. Microbial antagonism was drastically reduced.
3. She needs to be aware of opportunistic yeast infections when taking oral
antibiotics and self-medicate with over-the-counter antifungal agents.
Clinical Case Study: To Treat or Not to Treat? (p. 299)
1. Spectrum of action, efficacy (strain sensitivity to the drug), routes of administration
(ability to maintain an IV access), safety and side effects (toxicity,
allergies, tolerance for treatment), client age and physical condition,
resources to continue extensive treatment.
2. Because the risks of TB in the brain are more severe than the risks of multidrug
treatment, the doctors decided to treat the child for MDR-TB. A sixweek
culture from the infant’s bronchial secretions  produced the MDR strain
of TB; therefore, the more aggressive treatment continued well over 18
months before the infection was finally cleared.
