Freud felt strongly that unsuccessful resolution of any of the psychosexual stages of development would result in fixations, in addition to certain unhealthy personality characteristics. Additionally, unresolved issues at earlier stage consume portions of the libido (psychic energy) thereby leaving less energy to resolve future stages. For example, unsuccessful resolution of the genital stage may result in poor adult relationships and sexual relationships plagued with difficulties.
