Mineka of Northwestern University, what is meant by the phrase “going crazy”?
Answer: To access this information, enter MyPsychLab and click on Index of Multimedia. Once in the multimedia library, select chapter 12. Check the “select all” box and click “find now.” Under “Watch” locate and click on Going Crazy.

Dr. Mineka first makes it clear that “going crazy” or even the term crazy is not a clinical term used in the field of psychology. Thinking that everyone with psychological disorders or mental disorders is “crazy” is a myth that needs to be dispelled. She feels it is important that psychology students and even those seeking treatment for various disorders understands that the myth as just that . . . a myth. Dr. Mineka goes on to say that major mental disorders, such as schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders involving symptoms such as hallucinations, may be what is meant by the phrase “going crazy.” Dr. Mineka reminds us that not all mental disorders include psychotic behavior. For example, anxiety disorders do not include psychotic symptoms.
