Why would psychiatrists continue to prescribe Prozac and other SSRIs when there are claims that they increase suicide risk?

Because SSRIs are intended to help mild depression. Also medications do not stop suicides, only lessen the cause, which is depression. Similar to why do doctors give radiation for cancer when there use has been attributed to deaths? Because it helps and because its the best there is so far.

The FDA mandates that children and teens on SSRIs be closely monitored for suicide potential while on the medication for the first few weeks. Claims that Prozac and other SSRIs cause an increase in suicide risk, or that they cause suicide, in adults were not substantiated. That is, research did not support those claims. Regardless, these medications are still prescribed because many individuals experience significant improvement when taking antidepressant medications.
