Why after first meeting someone and forming an opinion about that person is it difficult to change that initial impression?

After meeting someone for the first time and forming an initial impression, any additional information regarding that person is generally disregarded if it does not fit the original impression. This is called the primacy effect. Thus, it becomes difficult to change how we view someone after that first impression.
