How might the efficiency of glycolysis change if this process occurred in only one step? I need to know why the answer is what it is, not an answer that's just more/less efficient.

If it were a single step, it would require a single enzyme instead of the 8+ enzymes currently involved. Hence, it would be more efficient, since less energy would be required to create these enzymes. However, there are advantages to a multi-step system as well as it would be better regulated.
