The nervous system releases neurotransmitters at specific sites in the body, whereas effects of the endocrine system affect the body more generally. Targets for the nervous system are nerve, gland, muscle, and fat cells; endocrine targets encompass all tissues. Nervous system effects are immediate and of short duration, while those of the endocrine system are gradual and last as long as days, even after hormonal secretion stops.
