The brain has a dual blood supply, receiving blood posteriorly from the vertebral arteries and anteriorly from the internal carotids. These two blood supplies mix at the cerebral arterial circle, and then are distributed to a series of other arteries that serve different parts of the brain. The cerebral arterial circle can redistribute blood to all of the arteries if one of the sources is decreased or stopped.
