The hard and soft palates separate the nasal cavity from the oral cavity to permit breathing to continue while an individual is chewing. If there was no separation between these two regions, or the person was forced to breathe through the mouth, the person would need to pause in chewing food to let air in or out, which is less efficient than having the two regions separated.
