Forced breathing occurs when the person is breathing to the maximum capacity, in hyperpnea, and requires active inspiratory and expiratory movements. These movements use both the primary respiratory muscles as well as the accessory respiratory muscles. These muscles include the abdominal muscles as well as the transverse thoracis and the internal intercostals.
