1) Our need to maintain individuality. We want to be like others, but not too much so. Members of collectivistic societies tend to conform more than members of individualistic societies.
   2) Our desire for personal control. We need to maintain control over ourselves and our lives, and to exercise our personal freedom.
   3) An inability to conform may be seen as resistance to conformity by some people. First, there may be physical limitations or handicaps that preclude conformity. Second, there may be legal or ethical hurdles that prevent conformity.
   4) Conflicting conformity pressures may exist. Conflicting pressures may be based on our different group memberships. For example, the female business executive may experience conformity pressures because of her gender and because of her status in a business. These pressures may conflict with each other. The person may conform to one set of pressures and resist the other.
   5) Reactance is our tendency to restore personal freedom by doing the opposite of what someone wants us to do.
