Negative genetic outcomes in the form of infants with recessive conditions due to inbreeding occur when a recessive allele is rare in a population. In such cases, there is a meaningful increase in the likelihood that a first-cousin mating will produce a child with a recessive phenotype. When the recessive allele frequency is q = 0.01, for example, the chance of producing a recessive homozygote from a first-cousin mating is only a few times more likely than the chance of producing a recessive homozygote by random mating.
