For the reaction of nitrogen dioxide and carbon monoxide
NO2 + CO --->  NO + CO2

the following mechanism has been proposed at high temperatures:
(1) NO2 + NO2 Rightwards Arrow  NO3 + NO(slow)
(2) NO3 + CO Rightwards Arrow  NO2 + CO2(fast)

Choose from below for each species that is an intermediate in this mechanism. (you can choose more than one)

1)NO2
2)NO
3)CO
4)CO2
5)None of the above is an intermediate.

any ideas?

The only intermediate is NO3 (it is present in the mechanism, but it is not a reactant or product overall). Therefore, 5 is correct.

On total reaction we can see that NO2 and CO are reactants while NO and CO2 are products. Intermediate doesn't exist as reactant nor product so the intermediate is NO3 then the answer is 5.
