Both are slender extensions of the cell membrane. Flagella are longer than cilia and usually fewer in number. Both are made from an array of microtubules, and both arise from centrioles that move to the plasma membrane to form basal bodies. Cilia provide a force that is parallel to the plasma membrane. They function in moving substances across the surface of the cell and sometimes in movement of the entire cell. Flagella exert a force perpendicular to the plasma membrane and are involved in movement of the entire cell.
