A survey of a population of house cats finds that there are 80 black cats and 20 white cats in a population. Use the hardy-weinberg principle to find the frequency pf the black allele and the white allele in the population.

I'm going to use the codes B for black and W for White, because I'm not sure which is dominant and which is recessive.

You take the percent of black and white alleles. That would equal to 80% black and 20% white. Now you multiply all possible combinations.

The formula is 1 = AA + 2Aa + aa or 1 = AA + Aa + aA + aa

B * B = (.80)(.80) = .64
B * W = (.80)(.20) = .16
W * B = (.80)(.20) = .16
W * W = (.20)(.20) = .04

.64+.16+.16+.04 = 1

So for 64% for BB,  32% for BW (or WB, they're the same thing), and 4% for WW.

That's just it.
